Physical attacks on journalists in Germany increased to 98 incidents in 2024, up from 69 in 2023, according to a new study by the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF). This marks the highest number of such attacks since the long-term study began in 2015, with a significant rise observed particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hate-fueled violence from the far-right remains a significant concern, the study indicates. Many physical assaults occurred during pro-Palestinian demonstrations related to the Israel-Palestine conflict, forcing media professionals to report under protective measures.

The extreme right continues to pose the most substantial threat to press freedom. Germany's Federal Ministry of the Interior recorded a new peak in far-right extremist crimes in 2024, a trend linked to increased mobilization and societal acceptance of certain ideologies, leading to more direct confrontations with journalists.

Berlin recorded the highest number of attacks with 62 incidents, followed by Saxony (10) and Bavaria (7). The study also highlights growing threats against local journalists, especially in eastern Germany. While security measures and support initiatives have been implemented, the report suggests further improvements are needed to ensure journalists' safety.
