Shrewsbury, Massachusetts – Physik Instrumente (PI), a global leader in precision motion control, has launched advanced piezo-driven and voice-coil-driven fast steering mirrors (FSMs) engineered for free-space optical communication (FSOC). These FSMs are vital for the expanding Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations, which depend on precise laser beam steering to maintain global internet connectivity.

The company’s FSM technology provides nanoradian-range angular resolution and kilohertz-range mechanical bandwidths. These capabilities are essential for maintaining stable optical links over distances of hundreds to thousands of kilometers between satellites, aircraft, and ground stations, enabling higher data rates, reduced latency, and lower power consumption compared to traditional radio frequency communications.

PI states that its FSMs are already operational in commercial LEO communication satellites and other space missions, with performance validated in harsh space environments.
