Pilot Union Applauds Senate Passage of Aviation Medical Reform Bills

The NetJets Association of Shared Aircraft Pilots (NJASAP), representing over 3,800 pilots flying for NetJets Aviation, has applauded the U.S. Senate for approving two legislative measures concerning aeromedical issues in aviation. The bills, S. 3257, known as the "John A. Hauser Mental Health in Aviation Act," and S. 3258, the "Aviation Medication Transparency Act," aim to address key concerns within the professional pilot community.

Senate Bill S. 3257 focuses on enhancing mental healthcare accessibility for pilots by reforming the aeromedical system. The legislation seeks to encourage air crew to seek treatment for mental health conditions without the fear of jeopardizing their careers or medical certificates. It directs the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to update outdated regulations, expedite lengthy processing times, and conduct annual reviews of the special issuance process.

"Aeromedical processes have been in need of reform for a very long time," said Capt. Coley George, NJASAP Government Affairs Committee Chair. He added, "Our intent is not to remove important safeguards, but to expand and refine treatment and medication options in response to evidence-based treatment options – and to do so in accordance with a reasonable timeline."

The second bill, S. 3258, aims to eliminate ambiguity surrounding medications. It addresses the difficulty pilots face in determining which over-the-counter and prescription drugs, and their specific dosages, are permissible while maintaining their medical certification. Capt. Pedro Leroux, NJASAP President, noted the challenge pilots encounter in navigating these complex rules.

NJASAP is now urging the House of Representatives to pass these companion bills, ensuring that these proposed reforms are sent to the President for final approval and enactment.
