Pixi Platforms Launches AR Messaging for iPhones

Pixi Platforms, a company co-founded by former Apple and SRI International personnel, has launched a new application for iOS devices. The app allows for the sending of augmented reality (AR) elements, such as talking characters, within messages in real-time.

CEO Mark Drummond, who previously worked on AR/VR projects including for Apple Vision Pro, believes that smartphones offer sufficient capabilities for short and simple AR experiences. Drummond highlights the ubiquity of these devices and the ability to share AR experiences with multiple people as key factors making them effective communication tools.

Pixi Platforms emphasizes user privacy. The AI functionalities that enable AR characters to react to their surroundings operate locally on the device, with no data being sent to the cloud. This approach aims to protect users' personal information, even as AI models are used in the app's development.

The application, Pixi Garden, currently functions via iMessage, requiring recipients to install the app to view the AR messages. Pixi Platforms also plans to expand the service to Android and other messaging platforms in the future. The company sees potential for brand collaborations with major intellectual property holders, enabling the use of their characters in personalized AR messages in a secure and brand-appropriate manner.
