Pizza Hut Temporarily Drops 'Pizza' from Name for NFL Season

Pizza Hut is shortening its name to "HUT" for the next 25 weeks, coinciding with the start of the NFL season. This limited-time "rebrand" is a marketing stunt appearing at select locations, not a widespread change to restaurant signage.

The "Pizza" portion of the restaurant's name is covered by a football-themed banner at some participating outlets. Pizza Hut CMO Melissa Friebe stated the initiative is a "playful, limited activation designed as a fun nod to our longtime role in football traditions." She added, "This creative take on our signage is simply a reminder to football fans that game day starts with 'Hut.'"

This campaign aligns with a broader trend of restaurant chains creating social media content through temporary name changes, similar to IHOP's "IHOb" campaign or Long John Silver's logo swap. The goal is not to sell a new product, but to maintain top-of-mind awareness among football fans.

The temporary name change comes as Pizza Hut faces business challenges, including a recent sale by Yum Brands and plans to close nearly 250 U.S. stores.
