Pjelax Wind Farm Components Arrive at Port of Kaskinen

Fortum Oyj has commenced the transport of components for its Pjelax wind farm to the Port of Kaskinen. Following a sea journey of thousands of kilometers, the initial wind turbine parts, including blades up to 80 meters long and tower sections, arrived during January.

The Port of Kaskinen, located south of Närpes, is receiving wind turbine components for the first time. The port will serve as a temporary storage facility for the blades and towers, with shipments continuing to the port throughout spring and summer. Approximately thirty ship calls are anticipated.

Project Manager Juha Tella, overseeing the construction, stated that the shipments to Kaskinen are a strategic decision. A reduced transport distance of 15 kilometers from the port to the construction site minimizes road transport, enhancing logistical efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Assembly of the wind turbines is slated to commence in autumn, with the first turbines projected to enter trial operation by summer 2023. Nordex, a German company, is the turbine supplier. The Pjelax wind farm is a joint venture between Fortum and Helen Oy, with completion targeted for summer 2024. Upon completion, the park is expected to generate approximately 1.1 terawatt-hours of renewable electricity annually from 56 wind turbines.
