Pjelax wind farm enters mFRR market for system balancing
Fortum's Pjelax wind farm will start participating in the manual Frequency Restoration Reserve (mFRR) market from June 2026. This initiative aims to unlock new value and enhance electricity system stability.

The Pjelax wind farm, a joint venture between Fortum (60%) and Helen (40%), is set to commence participation in the manual Frequency Restoration Reserve (mFRR) market starting June 2026. This move is expected to provide a new revenue stream for the facility and actively contribute to the stability of the electricity grid.
Fortum will manage the mFRR activation and market services for Pjelax, utilizing advanced automation and its market expertise. This system allows the wind farm to respond efficiently to grid needs, even amidst rapidly changing weather and market conditions.
With a capacity of 380 MW, Pjelax ranks among Finland's largest wind farms contributing to system balance. "As large renewable assets participate in balancing markets, they help strengthen system reliability and support a stable electricity supply during changing conditions," stated Antti Mäkinen, Product Manager for Flexibility Offering at Fortum.
The Pjelax facility operates with a high degree of automation, integrating forecasting, trading signals, and operational limits. This setup enables reliable participation in balancing markets without compromising core electricity production, even during challenging wind conditions. This integration supports Finland's power system as renewable capacity continues to grow.
Participation in the mFRR market allows the wind farm to support the grid by reducing output when there is excess electricity and holding back production to increase it when demand outstrips supply. This capability aids the transmission system operator in maintaining balance and system frequency.
