Plan International has condemned overnight attacks in Port Sudan, Sudan, which reportedly caused widespread damage, including to Port Sudan Airport, fuel warehouses, and a hotel housing diplomats and international aid workers.
The attacks represent a further escalation of violence in Sudan, now in its third year of conflict. The country is experiencing one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with millions displaced and lacking adequate food or healthcare.
"Port Sudan is burning. We are witnessing one of the most dramatic escalations of violence since the devastating conflict in Sudan started over two years ago," said Mohamed Kamal, Country Director for Plan International in Sudan, speaking from the city. "The destruction is immense, and the attacks show no sign of stopping. Our office is a ten-minute walk from one of the fuel depots which was hit with a drone strike this morning. Everywhere I look there are blazes burning and collapsed buildings. There is no safe place for people in Port Sudan right now."
Kamal highlighted that the attacks impact the organization's ability to deliver life-saving humanitarian aid to children, girls, and their families across Sudan, as well as jeopardizing the safety of their staff headquartered in the city. Plan International reiterated its calls for a sustainable peaceful resolution to the conflict and a significant increase in humanitarian assistance to all parts of the country.
