Plannja to Deliver First Residential Roofs in Scandinavia Made from Fossil-Free Steel
Plannja, part of Ruukki Construction, is set to be the first in Scandinavia to deliver residential roofing products made from fossil-free steel. The initial delivery will go to an OBOS housing project in Sweden.

Plannja, a manufacturer of sheet metal products and a subsidiary of Ruukki Construction, will become the first company in Scandinavia to supply residential roofing products manufactured with fossil-free steel. The initial pilot delivery is scheduled for later in 2023 to an OBOS housing development in Björröd, Västra Götaland, Sweden.
The roofing sheets and fittings will be produced at Plannja's facilities in Järnforsen and Landsbro, Sweden, utilizing SSAB's fossil-free steel. The product used for the OBOS project, which comprises eight single-family homes, is the Plannja Trend profile, further enhanced with a bio-based color coating derived from Swedish rapeseed oil.
Joakim Henriksson, CEO of OBOS Sweden, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative. "We are taking significant responsibility for reducing the climate impact of housing construction and simultaneously meeting the growing demand for homes with a lower climate footprint," he stated. OBOS has a long-standing collaboration with Plannja.
Torbjörn Henrysson, Business Director at Plannja Steinwalls AB, highlighted the company's commitment to leading the construction industry towards a fossil-free future. He noted that by incorporating fossil-free steel into roofing and facade products, the carbon footprint of the built environment can be substantially reduced. SSAB's fossil-free steel production process emits water as a by-product instead of CO2.
