Plant-Based Protein Product Sales Rise in K-Food Stores

Sales of plant-based protein meat substitutes and plant-based drinks in K-food stores have begun to increase after several years of decline. Growth exceeded five percent in the past year, with sales continuing to rise in early 2025.

The popularity of plant-based proteins grew significantly between 2018 and 2021, after which sales saw a decline for several years. In autumn 2024, sales started to rise again, and particularly in early 2025, these products have found their way into more shopping baskets. Over the past year, tofu sales have increased by as much as 20 percent. Sales of canned beans, chickpeas, and lentils have risen by nearly 15 percent, while dry soy protein products have grown by 10 percent.

Sales of plant-based beverage alternatives, such as oat-based barista drinks, also turned upwards in summer 2025. These products are particularly popular among young people and families with children. According to the retail chain, new nutritional recommendations and a constantly expanding product range contribute to these dietary shifts.

The increase in sales of plant-based products is part of K Group's sustainability strategy. The chain supports a diverse product selection, offering over 200 fully vegan products under its own brands. Promotions, consistently good value products, and personalized offers based on purchase history are used to boost sales. The K-Ruoka app allows customers to track their choices and compare them with nutritional recommendations.
