Plastic Recycling Dialogue Addresses Industry Challenges and Opportunities

The German Federal Foundation for the Environment (DBU), in collaboration with VDI ZRE, convened a dialogue to discuss the future of the plastics industry. The consensus was that the current "business as usual" approach is unsustainable, while a world entirely without plastics is equally unrealistic. The shared objective is to advance plastic circularity, ensure the competitiveness of recycled materials, and develop scalable business models.

A significant challenge lies in the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which mandates minimum recycled content from 2030. Concurrently, recycling companies are facing low demand and challenging economic conditions. Dr. Christine Bunte, CEO of PlasticsEurope Deutschland, emphasized the need for reliable framework conditions to enable companies to grow and invest in the necessary capacity.

A position paper, "Options for a Functional Market for Plastic Recyclates," prepared by the Wuppertal Institute at the DBU's behest and presented by Professor Henning Wilts, outlines potential solutions. These include clear signals for investment and demand, such as through public procurement, streamlined permitting processes, reduced material variety, and novel business models.

Stefanie Schäfter from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUKN) announced the "Future Circular Economy" funding program, which will provide €550 million from 2027. As an example of existing circular economy practices, Julia Eckey highlighted the company Pöppelmann GmbH & Co KG, which participated in a DBU-supported project. The DBU also continues its commitment through new initiatives.
