Pokémon Go Celebrates Decade of Sustained Popularity
Pokémon Go marks its tenth anniversary with enduring popularity. The game, which revolutionized mobile gaming by integrating it with real-world locations, continues to attract millions of players monthly.

Ten years after its launch, Pokémon Go continues to demonstrate remarkable staying power in the mobile gaming market. Originally developed by former Google engineers, the game transformed the world into a playground by merging the virtual Pokémon universe with real-world locations, encouraging players to be active and explore their surroundings.
Pokémon Go's initial success was immediate, surpassing 500 million downloads within months of its release. Now owned by Scopely, the game still attracts tens of millions of players monthly. Daily playtime has increased by 10% year-over-year, and the game company reported over $1 billion in revenue for 2024 alone. Cumulatively, Pokémon Go is estimated to have generated over $9 billion, making it one of the most lucrative mobile games to date.
The game's origins trace back to a joke. In 2014, Google released an April Fool's video showcasing a fictional game where players hunted Pokémon worldwide. This idea inspired Niantic Labs, which was already developing a location-based game called Ingress. By combining the Pokémon brand with Niantic's technology, they created a game where players hunted Pokémon in their own neighborhoods and collected items from virtual locations.
Over its decade-long existence, Pokémon Go has attracted over 800 million players who have collectively walked more than 60 billion miles. Regularly held live events, such as Pokémon Go Fest, draw millions of attendees. The company is also exploring new avenues, potentially incorporating satellite connectivity to expand gameplay into areas with limited traditional mobile network coverage.
Scopely has expanded its portfolio by acquiring Pokémon Go and associated titles. The company also sees potential in Pikmin Bloom, which has seen nearly an 80% increase in its daily average users and achieved significant success, particularly in Asia. While past ventures, like Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, did not achieve similar results, Scopely continues to innovate in the development of real-world location-based gaming experiences.
