Police Uncover New "Soft Extortion" Scheme in Logistics Sector

A sophisticated criminal operation targeting the logistics sector has been uncovered by police in China, according to reports by IT Home. The group allegedly used artificial intelligence (AI) to steal freight accounts and employed "soft extortion" methods, such as threatening to withhold shipments, to coerce cargo owners into paying inflated prices.

The investigation was triggered by numerous complaints from shippers on online freight platforms who reported drivers demanding extra payments outside of agreed contracts, threatening delivery delays, or withholding goods. Police in Yichang, Hubei Province, launched an investigation that led to the arrest of 16 suspects and the freezing of over 370,000 yuan (approximately $51,000 USD) in illicit funds.

The criminal syndicate operated with a layered structure. They acquired pre-verified driver accounts from illicit online channels, often using stolen or synthetic identities. These accounts were used to accept shipping orders, after which the fraudsters would engage with the cargo owners. They fabricated reasons for additional charges, such as "highway tolls" or "expedited fees." Refusal to pay often resulted in threats of delayed delivery, cargo seizure, or damage.

Investigators discovered that the group had developed advanced techniques, including using AI to create deepfake videos of drivers' faces. This allowed them to bypass platform security measures for account verification and take control of driver accounts. Police have successfully facilitated the return of 48 batches of seized cargo to their rightful owners.

Authorities warn that this new form of "soft extortion" not only causes financial losses for businesses but also damages their reputation. While this particular network has been disrupted, law enforcement advises the public to remain vigilant when using online logistics services and to report any suspicious activities immediately.
