Polish mountain rescue service adopts automated drone docking for emergency response
TOPR, Poland's volunteer mountain rescue service, has integrated automated DJI drone technology to accelerate search and rescue operations in the Tatra Mountains.

Poland's volunteer mountain rescue service, TOPR, is deploying automated drone technology to expedite emergency responses in the rugged Tatra Mountains. The initiative utilizes DJI drone docking stations, which allow rescue teams to launch aerial reconnaissance directly from specialized platforms, bypassing the time-consuming process of dispatching ground units to remote or inaccessible locations.
By deploying drones immediately upon receiving an alert, rescue commanders can conduct rapid site assessments before committing personnel to difficult terrain. Marcin Józefowicz, a rescuer and head of cybertechnology at TOPR, noted that this aerial capability helps teams determine if a full-scale rescue is necessary, potentially saving hours of labor in life-critical situations. The aircraft are equipped with thermal imaging to facilitate search operations in total darkness.
To overcome communication limitations in high-altitude environments, the rescue service has established a network of ground relays on remote summits, allowing for stable video transmission. Beyond emergency missions, TOPR is evaluating the system for daily trail monitoring and risk management. This deployment highlights the increasing reliance of public safety organizations on automated, remote-operated aviation to supplement traditional rescue tactics.
