Polymarket Saw $600 Million in Election Trades After Results
Prediction market platform Polymarket reported over $600 million in trading volume on global election markets, with a significant portion of trades involving contracts on losing candidates.

Prediction market platform Polymarket has seen over $600 million in trading volume across global election markets, with a notable portion of the activity focused on contracts tied to candidates who did not ultimately win.
In the June Ethiopian federal elections, where Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's Prosperity Party secured a sweeping victory, Polymarket's markets deviated from typical trading patterns. Usually, frontrunners attract more volume. However, in Ethiopia, only $173,000 was wagered on Ahmed winning, compared to over $41 million traded on contracts predicting his chief of staff, Shimelis Abdisa, would become leader.
Collectively, trading volume on two global election markets, including Ethiopia, reached over $285 million. The majority of this volume was concentrated on contracts concerning candidates who ultimately did not win the elections.
Ars Technica reported that Polymarket's offshore platform saw over $600 million in trading volume on two global election markets, far exceeding what most political markets typically attract. The report highlights that a substantial amount of this trading occurred after the election outcomes were clear, an unusual timing for such high activity.
