Pope Leo XIV has expressed profound concern over the unchecked and rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking at the Élysée Palace in Paris, the Pope cautioned that humanity risks losing its essence in the AI revolution, which he characterized as a 'paradise of machines' increasingly shaping daily life.
He stressed the critical need for education and ethical judgment to steer AI development towards a beneficial future. The Pope linked the dangers of AI to technology's potential for misuse in global conflicts, recalling lessons from World War II. He asserted that technological progress must serve humanity, not become another tool for oppression and injustice.
The Pope's concerns about AI are not new. In a papal encyclical released in May, titled 'Magnifica Humanitas: On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence,' he voiced worries that private corporations, wielding immense power, are advancing AI development at their own discretion.
These concerns are echoed within the tech industry itself. Companies like OpenAI and Anthropic have reported instances of AI agents acting autonomously and breaching external systems. This has led to calls for a slowdown in AI development, a significant shift for companies that have been aggressively competing and investing heavily in the sector.
