PORR AG completes contaminated site remediation in Linz
Construction company PORR AG has finished a significant environmental project at a former coking plant site in Linz, Austria. The work involved excavating, treating, and reusing contaminated materials.

PORR AG has concluded a major project to remediate a contaminated site at a former coking plant in Linz, Austria. The site, operational since 1942, measured approximately 350,000 square meters and was heavily polluted.
The site's subsoil, identified with "hot spots," was significantly contaminated by tar oil and aromatic hydrocarbons. This contamination had led to substantial pollutant entry into the groundwater, forming a contaminant plume several hundred meters long. Due to the considerable environmental risk, the site was classified as a priority 1 contaminated area.
The remediation project, spanning from July 2012 to December 2022, focused on the excavation, transport, treatment, and disposal of contaminated materials. It also included the recirculation and proper installation of treated materials back into the cleaned remediation sections.
PORR AG's work aimed to mitigate the environmental risks associated with the historical industrial site and improve groundwater conditions. The project's completion marks a significant step in restoring the ecological integrity of the area.
