PORR AG launches bee education trail in Vienna

Construction company PORR AG has expanded its sustainability efforts by opening a new educational bee trail at Monte Laa Park, near its Vienna headquarters. The initiative, named bee@PORR, which was launched five years ago, has now grown to encompass over 470 bee colonies across approximately 50 company locations.

The company aims to raise awareness about the importance of bees for the environment, particularly around the upcoming International Bee Day on May 20th. The new trail features five information boards designed to educate both children and adults about the structure of a bee colony, the life of a worker bee, and the products derived from bees beyond honey.

PORR is also sharing practical advice for those interested in urban beekeeping. The company highlights the rewards of city-based beekeeping, noting that urban environments can offer bees better food sources than some rural areas. PORR provides guidance on setup, including ensuring adequate space, planning time commitment, planting wildflowers, and utilizing digital tools for hive monitoring.

Furthermore, PORR advises prospective beekeepers on clarifying regulations, such as insurance and registration, and recommends contacting local beekeeping associations for further information and to borrow necessary equipment. The bee@PORR program seeks not only to promote bee conservation but also to engage employees in sustainability projects and provide them with opportunities to learn about beekeeping.
