PORR to Build Chip Factory for X-FAB in Erfurt
Construction company PORR AG has been awarded the contract to design and build X-FAB's new semiconductor factory in Erfurt, Germany. The project will include 3,500 square meters of cleanroom space.

PORR AG, an international construction company, has secured the contract to design and build a new semiconductor factory for X-FAB MEMS Foundry in Erfurt, Germany. The project, known as Fab4Micro, is scheduled for completion in July 2028.
The new facility will focus on the production of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and photonic systems at the wafer level. The contract encompasses approximately 3,500 square meters of cleanroom production area, an adjacent office wing, and integration into X-FAB's existing site.
The construction, set to run from July 2026 to July 2028, addresses the growing demand for semiconductors driven by sectors such as artificial intelligence and autonomous driving. The project is receiving funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and the Thuringian Ministry for Economic Affairs, supported by the European Chips Act.
PORR highlights its expertise in constructing specialized industrial facilities, including cleanrooms for the semiconductor and biotech industries. The company emphasizes the demanding requirements for cleanroom construction, such as vibration-free environments, fail-safe operation, and energy efficiency, offering turnkey solutions from planning to machine integration.
