PORR to build new e-vehicle production hall in Munich
Construction company PORR AG has secured a contract for the deconstruction and new build of parts of BMW's plant in Munich. The project covers the demolition of an existing production hall and the construction of a new facility for fully electric vehicles.

Austrian construction firm PORR AG has been awarded a contract to deconstruct and rebuild parts of the BMW Group plant in Munich. The project involves the demolition of the existing engine production facility and the construction of a new hall for assembling fully electric vehicles as part of BMW's "New Class" initiative. The new hall will have a gross floor area of approximately 150,000 square meters.
The construction will take place under challenging conditions, as vehicle production and plant logistics will continue throughout the process. The existing hall will be dismantled incrementally, with the new facility being built on the cleared space. PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss described the project as one of the most complex in the company's 150-year history.
A significant challenge is the limited space within the plant, which is located in central Munich. To ensure undisturbed operations, the project will employ Lean Construction principles from design to completion, utilizing BIM (Building Information Modeling) simulations to manage processes. Demolition is scheduled to begin in February 2024, with completion of the new production hall expected by November 2026.
PODR will leverage its internal expertise, involving multiple subsidiaries and external partners, to manage the planning, demolition, and construction phases of this complex project.
