PORR to start construction of central tunnel section for Munich's second S-Bahn main line
Construction company PORR AG has received the green light to begin building a central tunnel section for Munich's second S-Bahn main line. The new line is expected to significantly increase the city's public transport capacity.
Construction firm PORR AG has commenced the central construction phase for a tunnel section of Munich's second S-Bahn main line. The contract, valued in the three-digit millions of euros, covers contract unit 734, encompassing the eastern tunnel segment between Munich Ostbahnhof and the Berg-am-Laim-Strasse crossing, including rescue shaft 9.
DB InfraGO AG exercised its construction option for unit 734 on June 30, 2026, officially transitioning the project from the joint development and planning phase into construction. PORR's responsibilities include a broad range of services such as specialist civil engineering, structural engineering, road construction, excavation, culvert construction, and other infrastructure measures.
Munich's second S-Bahn main line is one of Germany's most significant transport infrastructure undertakings. The approximately 11-kilometer route aims to alleviate pressure on the existing main line, add capacity, and establish a more efficient S-Bahn system for the growing metropolitan region. The centerpiece is a roughly 7-kilometer tunnel running beneath the city.
Pror had previously been awarded contracts for initial works, including shaft construction for tunnel boring machines and cross-passages. The construction phase now begins following a successful and collaborative project development period.
