Porsche 911 Marks 60 Years of Automotive History
The iconic Porsche 911 sports car is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2023. First unveiled at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show as the 901, the model has become synonymous with driving performance.

The Porsche 911, a sports car considered an icon of automotive design, is commemorating 60 years since its introduction. The vehicle, first presented to the public at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in 1963, originally bore the name 901.
Full production commenced in September 1964 at Porsche's Zuffenhausen factory. The name change to 911 occurred prior to the model's market release, prompted by a naming rights claim from French manufacturer Peugeot. The 911 designation has since become intrinsically linked with success on both public roads and racing circuits.
Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, son of the company's founder, and his design team were responsible for the original 911. It featured an air-cooled, flat-six engine producing 130 PS, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds with a top speed of 210 km/h. Key design elements, such as the 2+2 seating arrangement and rear-engine configuration, have persisted through its evolution.
Over its 60-year history, the 911 has undergone eight generations of development. Notable designers involved in its evolution include Anatole Lapine and Harm Lagaay. Michael Mauer has overseen the design direction since 2004. The latest generation, the 992, has been in production since 2018.
Since its debut, over 1.2 million Porsche 911 models have been manufactured. The brand continues to develop the 911, aiming to retain the essence of its original design and driving characteristics.
