Porsche has confirmed that its forthcoming flagship sports car, positioned above the 911, will not be available as a purely electric model.

According to CEO Michael Leiters, the platform is not designed for all-electric variants due to a perceived absence of customer demand in this niche market. This stance comes as Porsche continues its broader electrification efforts with models like the Taycan, Macan, and Cayenne, and as the 718 Boxster and Cayman are set to return next year without internal combustion engines.

The German automaker distinguishes between mass-market EV adoption and persuading hypercar buyers to abandon traditional powertrains. For this specific project, customer preference for non-electric powertrains takes precedence over a full electrification mandate. The new platform, however, is designed for flexibility and will accommodate internal combustion engines, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids, but not full electric drivetrains.

This decision highlights Porsche's considered approach to electrification, particularly in the high-performance segment. While the industry rapidly shifts towards EVs, Porsche recognizes the enduring appeal of traditional powertrains for certain customers. This strategy diverges from some competitors like Lamborghini and Pagani, who have also encountered market demand challenges with electric hypercars.

Porsche is still exploring the final powertrain options for its future flagship, emphasizing a desire to retain flexibility by prioritizing combustion engines or electrified solutions over solely battery-electric configurations.
