Porsche plans to bring back a gasoline-powered version of its Macan SUV in 2028, according to CEO Michael Leiters. The move signals the automaker's strategy to offer both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) variants, rather than abandoning traditional powertrains entirely.

Leiters clarified in a recent interview that the perception of Porsche stepping back from electrification is inaccurate. Instead, the company aims to restore its ICE offerings alongside its electric vehicle (EV) lineup. He stressed the importance of avoiding redundant investments in the same market segments, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently to provide consumers with diverse choices.

"I think it's unfair to me to be seen as an EV skeptic," Leiters stated in an interview with the Financial Times. He acknowledged that Porsche may have over-invested in electrification prematurely before market demand matured.

The iconic 911 model will remain solely gasoline-powered, with no plans for a fully electric version. However, other model lines, such as the 718, are progressing with electrification. Leiters believes that gasoline powertrains still hold appeal for premium customers and is confident that the reintroduction of the ICE Macan will offer a balanced selection.

Porsche is concurrently developing a fully electric version of the 718. Leiters views these as distinct product decisions driven by actual consumer demand in different segments. The company maintains that with a fair competitive landscape, electrification technology itself is not a concern.
