Ports and terminals globally are under significant pressure to reduce their carbon emissions, as their energy-intensive operations contribute substantially to global logistics' environmental impact.

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), such as Kalmar, play a critical role in this decarbonisation effort. These companies shape the industry's trajectory through their technology selections, product design, and commitment to providing low- and zero-emission equipment.

"The decisions we make in this decade will shape emissions for decades ahead," stated a Kalmar representative. This is because the equipment and infrastructure being installed today will remain operational well into the 2030s and 2040s.

Decarbonisation will be achieved through multiple pathways, including electrification, hybridization, digital optimisation for efficiency, and the exploration of hydrogen and alternative fuels, alongside embracing circular economy principles. Successful transformation requires collaboration across the entire ecosystem.

Kalmar indicates there is no single solution. Electrification is currently the most effective approach, with battery-electric hybrid straddle carriers already offering 30-40% fuel savings over diesel units. Digital optimisation, hydrogen technology, and circular economy principles are also vital components of the journey toward zero emissions.
