Portable Formaldehyde Detectors Often Unreliable, Warns Science Group
A Chinese science communication platform warns that many portable formaldehyde detectors on the market do not provide accurate readings. Consumer association tests found no device capable of precise detection.

Many households concerned about formaldehyde levels after renovations are turning to portable formaldehyde detectors, which are popular on e-commerce platforms due to their small size and ease of use. However, a recent explanation by the "Science Refutation" platform, backed by various Chinese government bodies, indicates that claims of high accuracy, such as 99.9%, are not scientifically supported and that most devices provide unreliable and inaccurate results.
The detectors primarily use electrochemical sensors, but cost and technical limitations often result in insufficient precision. Factors like ambient temperature, humidity, and the presence of other volatile organic compounds can further skew readings, making them unreliable for accurate concentration measurements. A joint test by consumer associations in Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei on 50 different brands found no product capable of precise detection, with readings described as inconsistent.
These portable detectors should only be considered a rough reference, not a substitute for professional testing. Consumer groups emphasize that proper ventilation and the use of environmentally friendly building materials are more crucial for mitigating formaldehyde risks. Professional testing should be pursued when necessary.
Beyond detectors, regional consumer associations have also flagged misleading claims for formaldehyde removal devices and gels. Issues include exaggerated performance data from lab settings, the use of ozone disguised as harmless "active oxygen," and claims that undermine the importance of ventilation. Companies and e-commerce platforms have been urged to ensure compliance and prevent false advertising in this market.
