PPL Electric Utilities Selected for U.S. Department of Energy Grant for Grid Modernization

PPL Electric Utilities has been chosen to receive up to $71.5 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Energy's SPARK program. The grant will support the Montour Grid Resilience and Advanced Reconductoring Project, a significant initiative to modernize a 29.3-mile existing 230-kilovolt transmission corridor.

The project involves rebuilding the transmission line using advanced conductors, specifically Aluminum Conductor Steel Supported (ACSS) and Aluminum Conductor Composite Core (ACCC). These technologies are designed to carry more electricity, perform better in high temperatures, and offer greater long-term reliability while maximizing the use of existing rights-of-way. Additionally, the project will deploy Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology via optical ground wires to enhance system protection, communications, and grid operational monitoring.

According to the Department of Energy, the initiative aims to strengthen the electric grid's reliability, capacity, and resilience to meet growing energy demands. The goal is also to ensure more affordable and stable power for customers in the Susquehanna Valley, Greater Lehigh Valley, and Northeast Pennsylvania. This funding is part of a broader effort to upgrade the nation's electrical infrastructure and improve its overall robustness.

PPL Electric Utilities is expected to finalize the terms of the award with the Department of Energy in the coming months. The project is anticipated to foster local economic growth and enhance the long-term stability of the regional energy system.
