Precision Oncology: The Next Step in Cancer Treatment

Precision oncology is emerging as a significant new frontier in the fight against cancer. This therapeutic approach aims to provide each cancer patient with a tailored treatment plan, based on comprehensive molecular, cellular, and functional analyses of the patient's tumor.

The first type of so-called tumor-agnostic drug has recently been approved, pioneering a new class of treatments. These substances target specific signaling pathways regardless of the cancer's origin, such as breast or liver cancer, breaking from the traditional view that tumor location is the primary characteristic.

Professor Thomas Seufferlein from the University Hospital Ulm emphasizes the crucial role of molecular diagnostics. "We need molecular diagnostics to determine which therapy should be used in an individual case," Seufferlein stated. He anticipates that blood-based diagnostics will become increasingly common in cancer treatment in the future.

Precision oncology represents a step towards more individualized cancer care. While current diagnostics focus on genetic alterations, the ultimate goal is to achieve optimal efficacy with minimal side effects for the individual patient.

Oncologists should consider initiating molecular diagnostics, particularly for patients with advanced-stage cancer, good general health, and for whom no further established therapy options are available. Molecular tumor characterization may reveal new therapeutic avenues even for challenging cancers, such as pancreatic cancer.
