Exposure to glyphosate, the active ingredient in many commercial weed killers like Roundup, during the middle months of pregnancy may increase the likelihood of giving birth prematurely, according to new research led by NYU Langone Health. The study, which included 1,450 women, found that those with higher levels of glyphosate detected in their urine samples during mid-pregnancy were more likely to experience spontaneous labor before 37 weeks gestation compared to those with lower levels.

The research did not find a similar association when glyphosate levels were measured in early pregnancy. Furthermore, the study found no link between the chemical and preterm births that were medically induced by physicians for reasons such as preeclampsia or poor fetal growth. Residues of the herbicide are commonly found in food products like cereals, snacks, and produce, suggesting widespread potential exposure.

"Our findings add to a growing body of evidence that exposure to glyphosate early in life may lead to health concerns that can echo throughout a lifetime," stated study lead author Teresa Herrera, a doctoral candidate in population health at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Preterm birth is a significant cause of infant illness and death, often leading to long-term developmental and learning challenges.

Researchers analyzed data from the Children's Health and Environment Study, using urine samples collected at two points during pregnancy. The findings suggested that glyphosate's effects might be more closely tied to mechanisms that trigger labor spontaneously, such as inflammation, rather than to medical conditions prompting induced early deliveries. The authors advised families concerned about herbicide exposure to consider organic options and consult with healthcare providers.

Leonardo Trasande, senior author and professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, cautioned that the study cannot prove a direct causal link between glyphosate and preterm birth. However, he emphasized the need for stronger regulations to protect pregnant women and infants, who are particularly vulnerable to environmental chemicals. The study received funding from the National Institutes of Health.
