Premier Inn Commits to 50% Carbon Emission Cut by 2025
Premier Inn and parent company Whitbread have announced a commitment to halve carbon emission intensity by 2025 and reduce it by 88% by 2050.

Hotel chain Premier Inn has announced a significant environmental commitment aimed at cutting carbon emission intensity by 50% by 2025. This target is part of a broader initiative by parent company Whitbread, which has established a science-based carbon target (SBT).
The company plans to achieve these reductions by transitioning away from natural gas in new hotel builds and utilizing green gas across existing properties. Premier Inn will continue its commitment to using renewable energy in the UK and internationally where feasible. Additional measures include investing in energy-efficient appliances, reducing emissions from company car fleets and distribution vehicles by shifting to electric, hybrid, and alternative fuel vehicles, and installing solar panels on hotel estates.
Whitbread has already implemented substantial measures to reduce its carbon footprint. All UK-owned and operated sites currently use 100% renewable electricity. The company has also invested in energy-efficient equipment, such as LED lighting and heat recovery systems in hotel bathrooms. Over 100 hotels utilize solar panels for on-site electricity generation, and the switch to LED bulbs has saved approximately 10,000 tonnes of carbon.
James Pitcher, Whitbread's Director of Sustainability, emphasized the company's dedication to operating responsibly and ethically. "For us and all Whitbread brands, it is important to constantly seek new ways to enhance our environmental sustainability," Pitcher stated. The company's "Force For Good" program highlights its commitment to operations that respect people and the planet, contribute to communities, and create employment opportunities.
