Hotel chain Premier Inn has announced it will extend checkout times at its UK hotels on Sunday, March 29th. The move aims to compensate guests for the hour of sleep lost due to the clocks springing forward.

The company's research indicates that people across the UK are averaging just 6 hours and 27 minutes of sleep per night, falling short of the recommended 7 hours and 44 minutes. This deficit accumulates to approximately 20 days of lost sleep over a year. The spring time change particularly affects younger adults, with 49% of 25-34 year olds reporting their routines are thrown off balance.

Premier Inn's initiative, branded as 'Premier Lie-Inn', will push the standard 12 PM checkout time to 1 PM. The hotel group cited its research suggesting that longer sleep improves mood and overall happiness, noting that a lie-in is a rare luxury for many.

Regional variations in sleeping habits were also identified. Liverpool residents wake latest on average at 9:22 AM, while Cambridge residents are up by 8:43 AM. Liverpool was named the nation's 'lie-in capital', with one-third of adults there enjoying a longer morning sleep weekly.

This extended checkout is presented as part of Premier Inn's "You know what you’re getting" campaign, emphasizing comfort, consistency, and sleep quality for its guests.
