Premium Movie Formats Drive Box Office Success
Recent releases like 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' and 'The Odyssey' are drawing large audiences to cinemas, highlighting the growing appeal of premium formats. Moviegoers are seeking enhanced, immersive experiences that drive ticket sales.

Major film releases such as "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" and "The Odyssey" are significantly boosting cinema attendance, demonstrating the increasing popularity of premium viewing formats. "Spider-Man" achieved a domestic opening weekend gross of $360 million and has since surpassed $1 billion globally, while "The Odyssey" has also crossed the billion-dollar mark worldwide.
Audience demand for immersive cinematic experiences is on the rise, with premium formats playing a key role. Films like "The Odyssey" are selling out IMAX showings, particularly in 70mm. "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" saw a substantial portion of its opening weekend revenue, $31 million, come from ScreenX and 4DX theaters. These formats offer expanded panoramic views (ScreenX) or combine motion with environmental effects (4DX) to create a more engaging experience.
CJ 4DPLEX, the company behind ScreenX and 4DX, has seen its formats gain traction. "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" was the first film produced under its "Shot for ScreenX" initiative, which involved using additional cameras during principal photography. This collaboration aimed to deliver an experience that cannot be replicated at home via streaming.
Overall box office revenue has seen an upturn this year, partly attributed to the success of premium formats. While total theatrical revenue has not yet reached pre-pandemic levels, the industry is showing signs of recovery. CJ 4DPLEX is optimistic about future growth and is expanding its global network of ScreenX and 4DX locations, partnering with major cinema chains such as Cinemark and AMC. The company is anticipating continued success with upcoming major film releases in these specialized formats.
