PRISMA-Verlag has released its weekly streaming recommendations, highlighting the surprise return of a successful Austrian series, "Braunschlag 1986," now available on HBO Max.

The original "Braunschlag," which premiered on ORF 1 in autumn 2012, was a significant success in Austria, achieving up to a 36% market share and attracting one million viewers weekly during its primetime broadcast. Created by David Schalko, the series satirically depicted a fictional miracle in a small Austrian community.

Fourteen years later, HBO Max is releasing "Braunschlag 1986," a sequel consisting of seven episodes, each approximately 45 minutes long, which became available on July 16. The new series revisits the original characters, this time focusing on a fabricated tourist attraction where the village of Braunschlag imitates life in 1986. This "vacation in the past" serves as an escape from contemporary life.

The original "Braunschlag" followed the mayor and a disco owner's scheme to stage a miracle to save their bankrupt community. The plot escalated, involving the Vatican, local government, and an illegal nuclear waste dump. The show was recognized for its dark humor, deep melancholy, and irreverent take on religion, corruption, and Austrian idylls, leading to interpretations as a political allegory. "Braunschlag 1986" reunites almost the entire original cast and explores nostalgia as a form of municipal policy and tourism marketing.

Other recommendations for the week include the Apple TV+ miniseries "Lucky," starring Anya Taylor-Joy as a young woman navigating dangerous situations following her father's criminal past. Netflix offerings like "Heartstopper Forever" and "23,000 Leben" are also featured. PRISMA-Verlag's editorial team compiles these selections for viewers' weekly entertainment.
