Private group plans "cheapest possible" mission to Alpha Centauri

A private group, led by mathematician and physicist Philip Johnston, has announced its plans to launch a new mission to Alpha Centauri. According to Johnston, a co-founder of Starcloud, the project aims to investigate the Fermi paradox and search for signs of potential life in the universe.

The Fermi paradox refers to the contradiction that if life is common in the universe, humanity should have found credible evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations by now. Johnston and his team believe the mission could offer new perspectives on this mystery.

Starcloud, which Johnston co-founded in 2024, is initially focused on developing orbital data centers. The company is currently valued at $2.3 billion. While specific details of the Alpha Centauri mission remain scarce, it is stated to aim for the "cheapest possible" execution.
