Prof. Dr. Sonia Seneviratne, Professor of Land-Climate Dynamics at ETH Zurich, has received significant recognition for her work on climate change and extreme weather events. Her career includes substantial contributions to research, notably through her roles as a lead author for key Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports.
Seneviratne's academic journey began at ETH Zurich, where she earned her doctorate in Atmospheric and Climate Sciences. She has since progressed through the academic ranks at ETH, holding positions including Assistant Professor and becoming a Full Professor in 2016. Her research primarily focuses on the critical role of land surface conditions in the climate system and their response to climate change.
She has held significant leadership positions within international scientific bodies, serving as a co-chair for the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) "Grand Challenge" on Extremes. Furthermore, she played a crucial part in the IPCC's Special Report on Extreme Events and the Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C.
Seneviratne's research has been supported by substantial grants, including "MESMER-X" and "DROUGHT-HEAT" projects from the European Research Council (ERC). She has also been honored with numerous awards, such as the Hans Oeschger Medal from the European Geosciences Union, and was ranked ninth on Reuters' list of the most influential climate scientists in 2021. In 2023, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from Utrecht University.
