Professor Marcus Ong Elected to US National Academy of Medicine

Singapore General Hospital emergency medicine specialist Marcus Ong has become the first physician from Singapore in his field to be elected to the US National Academy of Medicine.

1 November 2026

Professor Marcus Ong, a senior consultant in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Singapore General Hospital (SGH), has been elected to the United States National Academy of Medicine (NAM). This appointment marks the first time an emergency medicine specialist from Singapore has received the recognition.

NAM elects members based on their contributions to medical science and healthcare policy. With up to 100 members chosen annually, the academy functions as an advisor on critical health issues. Ong is the fourth Singaporean to be inducted into the organization.

Over the past two decades, Ong has focused on improving outcomes for out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA). His efforts led to the implementation of the myResponder app and coordinated public training initiatives that have significantly increased bystander CPR rates and improved survival outcomes within Singapore. His framework for emergency care systems has also been supported by the World Health Organization.

Beyond his clinical work, Ong leads the Pan Asian Resuscitation Outcomes Study and holds key research positions at Duke-NUS Medical School. He attributed the achievement to the collective efforts of his research teams and collaborators, emphasizing the need for continued global cooperation in emergency medicine.
