Researchers have utilized proteomics to determine the composition of glues and adhesives used in ancient Egyptian artifacts, employing techniques that avoid damage to these valuable items.

A new study published in Science Advances analyzed a set of Egyptian artifacts using mass spectrometry-based proteomics. The findings revealed expected animal collagens and egg proteins, but also identified plant proteins, specifically from sesame and the drumstick tree (moringa).

There has been significant interest in understanding the specific pigments and painting techniques employed by the ancient Egyptians, whose artistic styles are well-documented. Common pigments included hematite and realgar for red, goethite and orpiment for yellow, and Egyptian blue. Understanding the materials aids in conservation efforts.

Proteomics offers a non-destructive method for examining delicate and precious historical objects, providing new insights into ancient cultures' technologies and material usage.
