Protesters occupy Microsoft data center site in the Netherlands

Over 150 demonstrators were arrested after entering a Microsoft data center construction site in the Netherlands to protest the environmental impact of AI infrastructure.

7 November 2026

Dutch police arrested between 150 and 200 activists on November 6 after they breached a construction site designated for a Microsoft data center. The protesters, organized under the group 'Stop Dirty Data Centres,' occupied the premises, climbed cranes, and displayed banners to challenge the water and energy consumption associated with large-scale digital infrastructure.

The demonstration in the Netherlands was part of a coordinated international effort spanning 16 countries aimed at halting the rapid expansion of data centers. Critics argue that these facilities place an unsustainable strain on local resources and local power grids, questioning the long-term environmental footprint of increasing AI adoption.

The project, which represents an investment of over $1 billion, is being developed by Pure Data Centres. The site operator urged protesters to evacuate for safety reasons and expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue regarding their concerns. Microsoft stated it respects the right to peaceful protest but condemned the unauthorized entry onto the property.

Following the breach, local law enforcement intervened to clear the site. The incident underscores a growing trend of public resistance toward the physical expansion of the digital economy as communities demand greater scrutiny over the resource intensity of data-intensive technologies.
