Prysmian and Rio Tinto Supply Low-Carbon Aluminum for Amazon Data Center
Prysmian and Rio Tinto have supplied the first electrical cables made with low-carbon ELYSIS aluminum for installation at an Amazon data center. This marks a significant step in reducing emissions from aluminum production.
Prysmian and Rio Tinto have contracted to supply electrical cables produced using low-carbon aluminum from ELYSIS technology for installation in an Amazon data center near Columbus, Ohio. This agreement represents the first known instance of inert-anode smelted, low-carbon aluminum being utilized in data center construction.
The ELYSIS technology enables aluminum production without direct greenhouse gas emissions from the smelting process. Instead, the process yields oxygen, a significant breakthrough in decarbonizing aluminum production.
Prysmian and Rio Tinto announced the introduction of aluminum produced with ELYSIS technology in building wire in March 2026, as part of their ambition to accelerate sustainability across their global operations.
"Our goal is to reach net-zero emissions across our operations by 2040 by decarbonizing our operations and supply chain, down to the raw materials," said Joern Tinnemeyer, VP of Data Center Engineering at Amazon Web Services (AWS). "Prysmian, Rio Tinto, and Wesco are demonstrating that lower-carbon materials are not a future concept – they are here and being installed in Amazon data centers today."
