Psilocybin Shows Potential to Prevent Chemotherapy-Induced Nerve Pain
Researchers have found evidence that psilocybin, the compound in magic mushrooms, may prevent nerve pain caused by chemotherapy in cancer patients. Early studies in mice show promising results.

A research group led by clinicians and researchers at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has identified a potential protective effect of psilocybin, the psychedelic compound found in magic mushrooms, against nerve pain associated with chemotherapy.
Chemotherapy can cause debilitating nerve damage, known as peripheral neuropathy, which can persist long after treatment. This condition has historically lacked effective treatments. In a study involving mice, administration of psilocybin prior to chemotherapy reportedly blocked the development of neuropathy. Mice in a control group without psilocybin experienced hypersensitivity to pain and reduced sensation in their paws.
The research, published in Nature, suggests psilocybin may shield nerves by maintaining the normal function of mitochondria, the energy-producing components within cells. This mechanism could prevent the degeneration of nerve endings that leads to chronic pain and loss of sensation. The study also indicated that chemotherapy remained effective in reducing tumors in the psilocybin-treated group.
Given the compelling results, human trials are slated to begin this month. Peripheral neuropathy affects over a third of chemotherapy patients, a number expected to rise with improved cancer survival rates. For those undergoing platinum-based chemotherapy, the incidence can be as high as 60%.
This finding is part of a broader resurgence in research into psychedelic substances for medical applications. Psilocybin has previously shown promise in treating conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. The current study extends the potential utility of psychedelics to managing side effects of cancer treatments.
