Psychobiotics May Improve Sleep Quality and Energy Levels

Psychobiotics, probiotic bacteria that can positively impact mental health, may also improve sleep quality, according to research from Irish biotechnology company Novonesis.

An eight-week placebo-controlled study involved 168 adults with mild to moderate depressive symptoms who were not taking antidepressants, sleep medication, or undergoing cognitive behavioral therapy. Half of the participants received capsules containing the Bifidobacterium longum 1714 strain daily, while the other half received identical placebo capsules.

While the study did not find a statistically significant difference in overall depression scores between the probiotic and placebo groups by the end of the eight weeks, significant improvements were observed in sleep quality and vitality.

By week four, the probiotic group reported falling asleep faster than the control group. The bacteria strain also aided individuals who identified as 'poor sleepers'. Furthermore, participants taking the probiotic reported higher quality of life, including better mental health, social functioning, and vitality. These increases in vitality correlated strongly with lower depression scores.
