Calgary, Alberta – New psychological assessment methods designed to account for cultural differences among Indigenous populations are being developed in Calgary. Psychologist Randi Sager, who has personal ties to Indigenous cultures, has joined the clinical team at Solasta Counselling. Sager's work aims to improve the accuracy and relevance of assessments for autism, ADHD, and general cognitive functioning for Indigenous adults.

Traditional psychological tests have been developed and normed primarily on non-Indigenous populations. This has resulted in outcomes that may not accurately reflect the experiences and cultural backgrounds of Indigenous individuals. Sager leverages her experience and clinical training, including her heritage that is both First Nations (Dakota, Saulteaux, Nêhiyaw, Métis) and European, to tailor the assessment process. She also integrates teachings from Elders and Knowledge Holders, along with training in Indigenous-focused counselling and decolonization approaches.

According to Scott McKirdy, co-owner of Solasta Counselling, Sager's approach is respectful and person-centered, focusing on the individual being assessed rather than solely on the tools used. Sager's experience also includes understanding intergenerational trauma, grief, and complex life experiences. Her holistic, strengths-based assessment process aligns with calls in Canada for culturally grounded and Indigenous-led mental health care.

Randi Sager also serves as faculty at City University of Seattle, training future clinicians. Her work seeks to ensure that psychological assessments are not only clinically accurate but also culturally sensitive and equitable for all clients.
