For decades, intelligence quotient (IQ) tests have served as a primary measure of cognitive ability. However, a growing number of psychologists are now questioning the validity and scope of these tests, suggesting they provide an incomplete picture of an individual's intelligence.

These experts contend that IQ tests often reward skills honed through formal schooling and cultural familiarity, overlooking other vital forms of intelligence. This includes practical, adaptive intelligence and real-world problem-solving capabilities that are essential for navigating life and achieving success.

"Intelligence is a very complex thing. It’s difficult to define and difficult to measure," stated Dr. Rebecca Sear, a psychology professor at Brunel University of London, in a discussion with BBC Science Focus. Sear has actively advocated for the retraction of studies relying on databases that rank countries by intelligence, citing fundamental flaws in the methodology.

Unlike more straightforward biological measurements, intelligence is not a single, easily quantifiable trait. It is understood as a multifaceted construct encompassing creativity, empathy, interpersonal judgment, and common sense. These qualities are not typically assessed by standard IQ examinations. Research indicates that IQ scores explain only about 30% of the variation in academic performance, suggesting that the tests' influence in educational settings might create self-fulfilling prophecies.

The limitations of IQ tests are further highlighted by differing cultural contexts and varying levels of access to education. Standardized tests often rely heavily on skills developed through formal education, such as reading comprehension, timed logic puzzles, and familiarity with paper-and-pencil tasks, potentially disadvantaging individuals from diverse backgrounds.
