Public broadcasters ease broadcast fee obligations for German businesses
ARD, ZDF, and Deutschlandradio have updated exemption policies for businesses affected by government-mandated pandemic closures.

ARD, ZDF, and Deutschlandradio have announced a policy adjustment allowing businesses to apply for exemptions from the mandatory broadcast fee. The update is intended to provide financial relief to companies and institutions that have faced repeated or extended closures due to government-ordered pandemic restrictions.
Under the revised criteria, entities may qualify for an exemption if a business premise has been closed for a cumulative total of at least three months. The previous requirement that the closure period must consist of three consecutive calendar months has been removed. Businesses can now aggregate all days spent under lockdown orders to reach the three-month threshold.
The administrative body responsible for the collection of these fees, the Beitragsservice, has made the necessary application forms available on its official website. This move represents a significant change in how the public broadcasting system manages non-private accounts during periods of state-enforced economic disruption.
