Publix Closes Stores While Pursuing Expansion

Publix, the southeastern U.S. grocery chain, has closed multiple locations this year, while simultaneously signaling growth in its overall footprint. The most recent closure occurred at the Palm Bay Center in Florida.

According to Florida Today, the store's closure is tied to a planned redevelopment project that will demolish the existing building and construct a new Publix. The original store had been in operation for nearly 50 years before closing its doors on Saturday, July 11. The location was 4711 Babcock St NE, Palm Bay, Florida 32905.

Several Publix locations have closed this year, with reports indicating closures in St. Petersburg, Miami, and Goose Creek, South Carolina. Additionally, two stores in Georgia closed at the end of 2025.

Publix operates over 1,400 stores across eight states, with nearly 900 in Florida. The company has opened 18 new stores this year. In the first quarter, Publix reported revenue of $16.1 billion, a 2% year-over-year increase, while net earnings fell 21.5% to $794 million.
