Publix reports five consecutive quarters of declining comparable store sales
Florida-based grocer Publix saw third-quarter revenue hit $15.5 billion, but comparable store sales fell 0.6% as shoppers cut spending amid persistent price sensitivity.

Publix reported a one percent increase in total revenue to $15.5 billion for the third quarter of 2026, yet the figures mask a persistent trend of cooling consumer demand. Comparable-store sales declined by 0.6 percent, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of negative growth for the grocer’s existing locations.
Net earnings for the period reached $1.1 billion, a decline of less than 10 percent year-over-year. The company attributed the softened performance to ongoing price sensitivity among customers and lower pharmaceutical sales, the latter driven by regulatory adjustments to Medicare drug pricing under the Inflation Reduction Act.
Food economics experts note that the current environment is heavily influenced by the cumulative effect of inflation since 2020. With food-at-home prices remaining approximately 30 percent higher than at the start of the decade, consumers have increasingly adopted cost-saving habits. These include trading down to cheaper goods and splitting grocery trips among competitors to mitigate the impact of historically high food costs.
