Qualcomm and Apple Extend Global Patent License Agreement to 2027

Qualcomm has announced the extension of its global patent license agreement with Apple. The new agreement is set to take effect on April 1, 2027, ensuring continued access to Qualcomm's patent portfolio for Apple devices.

The extension of this licensing deal is a significant commercial development for both technology firms. While specific terms were not disclosed, the agreement covers Qualcomm's patent licensing division (QTL) and Apple's patent needs for its manufactured products.

Qualcomm and Apple have previously engaged in lengthy patent disputes, settling most of them in 2019. That six-year agreement, which included a two-year renewal option, has now been solidified with this new pact. As part of the 2019 settlement, Apple reportedly paid approximately $4.5 billion.

The contract extension also has implications for Apple's in-house chip development. Recent reports indicate that Apple's self-developed 5G modem chip progress has lagged, making Qualcomm's chips essential for upcoming iPhone models at least through 2026.

Apple has long been a major customer for Qualcomm, accounting for nearly a quarter of Qualcomm's revenue. Qualcomm's QTL business is highly profitable, operating with substantial pre-tax profit margins.
