Qualcomm Raises Prices With New High-End Mobile Chip Tier

Chip manufacturer Qualcomm has announced two new high-end mobile processors: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the even more powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. The Extreme model is positioned for "the best, most aspirational devices," and its introduction signals Qualcomm's response to rising manufacturing costs.

Previously, Qualcomm's strategy involved releasing more mainstream versions of its flagship chips some months after the initial launch. Now, the company has introduced a new, premium "Extreme" tier. This allows for higher costs to be absorbed by the most expensive devices without significantly increasing the price of the standard flagship chip, aligning with a global memory shortage that is driving up electronics production expenses.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 features advanced graphics capabilities and integrated AI cores designed to enhance gaming performance and improve power efficiency. A new packaging technology moves memory away from the hottest chip components, enabling sustained peak performance for longer. Qualcomm is also targeting support for larger AI models running locally on smartphones.

Global smartphone shipments are projected to decline significantly this year, though premium phones are expected to be more resilient. Qualcomm's new pricing strategy, with the pricier Extreme chip adding cost to the highest-end devices, addresses this market trend. Apple has previously employed a similar strategy with its mobile chip releases.
