Qualcomm Unveils Dual Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Boosts AI Performance to 5GHz

Qualcomm revealed two distinct versions of its flagship mobile processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 "Super" Elite, at its recent Snapdragon Summit.

The "Super" Elite model introduces advanced features, including VVC codec support, LPDDR6 memory, and an optimized thermal design. It also enables professional video capabilities like APV codec support and 8K 60fps recording, distinguishing it from the standard Elite version. Both processor versions share the same CPU and GPU architecture and core frequencies, with differences primarily in specific performance specifications, according to Qualcomm.

The company highlighted its new Oryon CPU reaching a 5GHz clock speed, aimed at improving AI workload performance and task planning. While AI workloads are shifting towards throughput, Qualcomm emphasizes that fast CPU performance remains crucial for efficient task management and resource allocation across processing units. Qualcomm also discussed the conceptual "HBC" (High Bandwidth Compute) architecture, designed to increase data transfer speeds between processors and memory for future AI applications, with more details expected later. The company also confirmed its ongoing strong partnership with Xiaomi, despite Xiaomi's own chip development efforts. Qualcomm noted that the higher cost of premium processors reflects their advanced features, allowing OEMs to select chipsets that align with their product offerings and target price points.
