IT research firm Info-Tech Research Group has assessed the current landscape of quantum computing, concluding that while quantum annealers are already providing value for complex optimization problems, significant breakthroughs for enterprise-grade gate-based quantum computers are still several years away.

Many organizations are struggling to identify where quantum technology can deliver tangible business value. Info-Tech's new blueprint, "Identify and Evaluate Quantum Computing Use Cases," offers a structured framework for business leaders to assess the technology's potential. Current applications are concentrated in scientific exploration and highly complex optimization tasks.

"Quantum computing is far more specialized and harder to implement than, for example, AI," said Brian Jackson, principal research director at Info-Tech Research Group. "But for the right kinds of problems, like complex molecular interactions in pharmaceutical or chemical manufacturing, it could be transformational. CIOs should focus on identifying targeted use cases now so they are prepared to act when the technology matures."

Info-Tech forecasts that widespread commercial breakthroughs for gate-based quantum computing are most likely between 2032 and 2035, particularly in manufacturing, energy, and logistics sectors. Until then, quantum annealers and quantum-inspired algorithms will be key to solving complex optimization challenges. Identifying, evaluating, and achieving organizational readiness are crucial steps for leveraging quantum computing.
